2015 Jeep® Renegade

New for 2015

The Renegade is a completely new model, and the smallest Jeep® currently available.

Honey, I Shrunk the Jeep

Tiny crossovers are all the rage these days, but what happens when one of the brands that invented the modern SUV takes a crack at one?

The 2015 Jeep Renegade isn’t your average Jeep. It’s much smaller than anything sporting the brand’s seven-slot grille these days, and shares its platform and engines with various Fiat models. Yet take it off road, and the Renegade will prove that it’s a a real Jeep through and through.

Powertrains and Performance

It may be small, but the Renegade is still a Jeep. So while it delivers the fuel economy one would expect of a subcompact crossover, it can also hold its own off road. That Trail Rated badge on the fender isn’t just for show.

The standard powertrain includes a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It’s available with a six-speed manual transmission with front-wheel drive or a nine-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, and Jeep Active Drive four-wheel drive is optional.

For a little extra power, Jeep also offers the 2.4-liter Tigershark four-cylinder with 180 hp and 175 lb-ft of torque. It’s only available with the nine-speed automatic, but buyers can still choose between front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive.

EPA fuel-economy numbers are only available for the larger engine with front-wheel drive, and it gets a respectable 25 mpg combined (22 mpg city, 31 mpg highway).* Ratings for the other configurations should become available soon.

Opt for the Renegade Trailhawk model, and you’ll get some extra off-road hardware, including a Jeep Active Drive Low four-wheel drive system with a 20:1 low range for crawling over slippery or loose surfaces.

All four-wheel drive Renegade models come with Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system that adjusts vehicle parameters for different conditions, but the Trailhawk adds a “Rock” mode, plus increased ground clearance, more aggressive tires, and hill-descent control.

Features and Trims

The 2015 Jeep Renegade is available solely as a five-door, five-seat crossover. It comes in four trim levels, with prices starting at $17,995.**

Starting with the base Sport model, standard equipment includes cloth front bucket seats, a rear 60/40 split-folding bench, cargo tie-down loops, and steering wheel mounted audio controls.

Moving up to the Latitude model encompasses all of the applicable standard features from the Sport, and nets 16-inch aluminum wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, USB charging port, 5-inch touchscreen display, and SiriusXM satellite radio with a complimentary one-year subscription.

The above-mentioned Trailhawk comes next in the Renegade hierarchy. In addition to the most off-road equipment of any Renegade model, it includes features like a 7-inch TFT gauge cluster display, leather-wrapped shift knob, premium cloth bucket seats, and unique exterior and interior styling features.

Finally, there’s the Limited, which adds features like heated, leather-trimmed front seats, power adjustment for the driver, a 40/20/40 rear-seat cargo pass-through, dual-zone automatic climate control, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Exterior/Interior

The 2015 Renegade may be unusually small for a modern Jeep, but its styling makes this pint-sized off-roader impossible to confuse with anything else.

Its boxy silhouette and squared-off wheel wells are framed by the Jeep-signature seven-slot grille and round headlights at the front, and taillights with “X” graphics me ants to reference World War II-era Jerry Cans. The Trailhawk model looks particularly sharp with its own colors and graphics, 17-inch alloy wheels, and red tow loops.

The interior is equally rugged looking. Jeep’s designers call the look “Tek-Tonic,”and say it’s characterized by the intersection of soft and tactile forms like the soft-touch dashboard with tougher elements like anodized trim and the passenger-side grab handle—a worthwhile feature for off-road excursions.

Other notable features include the available Uconnect infotainment system with an available 6.5-inch center-stack touchscreen, a 7-inch TFT gauge cluster display, and the My Sky roof with removable panels that put the average sunroof to shame.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2015 Jeep Renegade includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, electronic roll mitigation, and a full array of airbags. A rearview camera is also available, and hill descent control comes standard on the Trailhawk model.

Bottom Line

The 2015 Jeep Renegade is not only a good subcompact crossover, it’s also a genuine Jeep. Most vehicles in this class will perform mundane tasks like commuting and grocery getting with aplomb, but only the Renegade can match that on-road performance with genuine off-road ability.
